Broken wheat (nurukku gothumbe) upma
Broken wheat upma has all the goodness of whole wheat and
you can add vegetables like carrots, peas etc. to make it healthier.
Ingredients
- Broken wheat- 1 cup
- Olive oil -1tbsp.
- Mustard – 1tsp.
- Black gram (udad dal)- 1 tsp.
- Ginger (chopped)- 1 “piece
- Green chilies (chopped)- 1 tsp.
- Shallots (sliced)-4 to 5
- Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
- Carrots (grated)- 1(medium size)
- Green peas (fresh)- ¼ cup
- Grated coconut- ¼ cup.
Method
- Wash and soak a cup of broken wheat so that it is just immersed in water.
- After an hour pressure cook it with enough salt and just enough water to cook it (about 10 mins.)
- Heat oil in a wok and splutter mustard seed and add the udad dal, sauté till it turns golden brown.
- Now add chopped shallots, ginger, green chilies and curry leaves. Stir till it starts to change its color slightly.
- Now add the vegetables, stir well add salt for the vegetable and cover and cook it at a very low flame, stirring occasionally.
- Add cooked broken wheat and grated coconut mix well and serve.
Note: - you can have it without any side dish or with pickle
of your choice.
